Inspired by the Loki Stone
The picture is inspired by the most famous carved stone in Kirkby Stephen Parish Church stands by a pillar, confronting you as you come in. It is the so-called Loki Stone or Bound Devil.
It is obviously a section of a slab-like cross shaft. The carvings on the sides are simple patterns of twisted strands but that on the face is unique.

The Runic inspription: RAþE SA ER KAN NAMN …
This motif is inspired by a coded runic inscription that was written on the baptismal font in Kareby Church in Bohuslen in Sweden. In Norse the runic text says Ráði, sá he can, nafn "orklaski" , ie "Interpret you who can the name … Blessed is who can read the name on the shirt?
